Recon Is an Add-On, Not a Standalone Monitor

It reports through a WildCore controller. Here is exactly what you need on the feeder.

Recon FAQ

Does Recon work on its own?
No. Recon is an add-on sensor, not a standalone device. It pairs to a WildCore® Pro, or a Mini on a Plus plan, on the same feeder and reports through it, so the feed level shows up in the WildCore portal alongside everything else that feeder is doing.
Which WildCore controller do I need?
Recon pairs with a WildCore Pro, or a WildCore Mini on a Plus plan, on the same feeder — with an active plan on that feeder. A standalone Mini (no Plus plan) cannot report a Recon: add a Plus plan to it, or use a Pro. One Recon pairs to one controller.
How does Recon install?
In seconds, with no tools. Put the batteries in first, while Recon is still in your hands — the battery door sits between the sensor and the lid, so you cannot reach it once it is mounted. Three powerful magnets hold it to the lid, so there is no extra wiring to run. To pair it:
  1. Put the batteries in the Recon.
  2. Hold the Recon in your hand next to the controller.
  3. Short-press F1 on the controller (quick restart).
  4. Wait for the pairing tune on both boards.
  5. If a firmware update starts (a short chirp from the controller), stay there and let it finish — up to about 3 minutes — until both boards play the “Dukes” tune. A siren from the controller after the chirp means the update did not take: pull the Recon batteries and pair again.
  6. Then mount the Recon near the center of the underside of your hopper lid.
When it is time to change batteries, do not pull straight down — the magnets hold hard. Pry gently near one magnet with a large flat-head screwdriver. Setup walkthroughs live in Support.
How do I know the feed level is right?
Calibrate it once from the portal. With the hopper filled the way you normally fill it, tap This is FULL; when it is empty, tap This is EMPTY. Those set 100% and 0% for that hopper, so a part-way fill still reads as full. Green means 40% or more, “Getting low” is 20–39%, and red is under 20%. You get a low-feed alert at 15%.
Does Recon get updates?
Yes, free. Recon updates arrive through the controller it is paired with — at pairing and on their own schedule after that. If the link between the two is weak, the portal shows update paused (weak link) · Retry update. That is not an error; the update simply waits for a better link, or you can retry.
Do I need another subscription for Recon?
No. Recon reports through the WildCore plan already active on the paired feeder. There is no separate Recon plan, no add-on fee, and no second app or login.
Can I use Recon across a lot of feeders?
Yes. One Recon goes on each feeder you want to monitor. In Ranch Mode™ you see feed levels across the whole property on one dashboard, so you refill the feeders that actually need it instead of driving the whole route.
How long does the Recon battery last?
It depends on your battery quality and how often the sensor reports. Recon is designed to be a set-it-and-forget-it device for the season, and we continue to optimize battery performance over time through free firmware updates. We recommend Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries for the longest life, especially in heat.
My hopper lid is plastic or aluminum — will the magnets work?
Most hopper lids are steel and Recon sticks right on. For plastic or aluminum lids, do what our customers do: glue a thin piece of steel (round works best) to the underside of the lid with outdoor caulk or adhesive, and mount Recon to that.
